Under the Patch

Environmental storytelling through symbolic animation, motion design, and emotionally driven visual systems.

My Role in the System

I co-developed the project from initial concept through final animation, helping shape the narrative, storyboard structure, visual language, and emotional pacing of the piece over a 13-week production cycle.

The brief challenged us to create an animated short addressing a current issue with a clear call to action. In response, we developed an environmental narrative centered on symbolic storytelling, using motion, illustration, and visual contrast to guide the viewer from uncertainty toward awareness and engagement.

I led the visual development, animation, and final editing of the project, creating custom assets in Illustrator and structuring the motion system to support emotional continuity, narrative clarity, and tonal progression across the short.

System Overview

The project structured environmental storytelling as a motion-driven visual system, using symbolic imagery, pacing, sound, and scene progression to communicate emotional and thematic change over time.

Rather than relying heavily on dialogue or exposition, the animation used visual contrast, environmental transformation, and character-driven storytelling to guide the viewer through the narrative arc and reinforce the project’s environmental message.

The system combined storyboard planning, custom illustration assets, animation sequencing, editing, and audio integration into a cohesive production pipeline, allowing narrative, motion, and visual design to function as interconnected parts of the experience.

Each scene was designed to contribute to the emotional rhythm of the short, balancing clarity, atmosphere, and symbolic continuity while supporting the project’s final call to action.

Project Goals

The project aimed to communicate an environmental issue through emotionally driven visual storytelling, using animation and symbolic design to create awareness and encourage viewer engagement.

Key goals included developing a cohesive narrative arc, building a recognizable visual language, and maintaining continuity across illustration, motion, sound, and editing throughout the piece.

The system balanced atmosphere, emotional pacing, and accessibility within a short-form animated format, allowing the environmental message to remain clear without relying heavily on exposition or dialogue.
